Pattern

Our brand pattern is built upon a geometric framework of triangular pieces. A group of six triangles in the pattern form the hexagonal shape of our logo, and represent the idea of looking deeper at the parts of a whole. The pattern can be used whenever a texture is needed: packaging, trade show booth walls, advertising, swag and marketing collateral.

Pattern Overview

The pattern should never be used in its full form. Instead, modify the pattern by either removing lines or filling parts with brand colors or tints to create a more organic, balanced and customized look. The pattern should interact intentionally with the other design elements, rather than simply being placed in a layout as is. Modifications to the pattern are up to the designer’s discretion, with the goal of creating a unique yet appropriate look and feel for a given piece.

Due to the nature of the pattern file type (.eps) and aesthetic recommendations, we request that it’s only used by graphic design professionals. Please reach out to the Foundation Medicine Creative Team for help with the pattern.

Pattern & Opacity Fills

Our pattern can incorporate fill to provide additional variation in communication materials. We do this by filling triangles in the pattern structure to achieve a randomized look. Use varying tints or opacities on the triangle fills to create more dynamic visual nuance.

We prefer that the pattern be either all lines with no fills or all fills with no lines. If you have a compelling reason to use both fills and lines, we would like the lines to be either knocked out to white, or in slate on white background. Please do not use filled triangles with the lines in one of our other brand colors.

Scale

The scale of the triangle pattern should be intentional, with thought put into how the size of triangles work best with the overall layout of the piece.

  • In print collateral or digital graphics, the pattern’s line weight should always be at .5pt, even if scaled up.

  • In large-scale environmental graphics such as trade show booths or office wallpapers, the line weight should be scaled up according to the size of the environment. We recommend doing several at-scale tests to see what feels best for the space. In this example, the pattern is inset into the wall substrate, rather than being a printed graphic.

Do:

  • Make consistent use of the pattern between documents of the same kind, such as commercial sell sheets.

  • Use the pattern sparingly

Don't:

  • Use the pattern in ways that hide or decrease legibility of key content.

  • Place the pattern over the faces of people in photographs.

  • Use multiple versions of the pattern in any one design.

  • Use an over-sized pattern.

  • Use a very small pattern
