Illustration & Animation

We use a simple, flat illustration style, with unexpected and delightful elements brought in for visual interest and uniqueness. Our illustrations are positive, artful, simple, modern, playful and dynamic.

Illustrations should contain a single color outline with consistent line weight. Foundation Medicine brand colors can be used as fills to create contrast, or draw attention.

Depending on the audience or message conveyed, a more playful style can employed:

When creating a new illustration, consider starting with an icon from our library. After selecting an existing icon, add partial fills in a variety of colors and other elements as needed to communicate your concept. As a reminder, illustrations are always more involved and detailed than icons.

There may be times when completely new illustrations will be needed. Please follow the look and feel of our existing illustrations when creating new illustrations, and be sure to consult with the Creative Team.

While our illustration style is simple and clear, we like it to also feel light and dynamic. When thinking about placement of graphic elements, consider off-center options or ways to make the elements feel like they’re in motion.

In addition to static illustrations, we often create animations to convey complex processes in a simple and memorable way. Similar to our illustrations, our animation style is flat and simple. Please use a limited color palette for animations, to focus the viewer’s attention on the content and to avoid over-complicating the material.
